Trying Out Community Builder

Alrighty then.  I've been searching around for the best way to set up a cummunity base on this site.  Most are incredibly buiggy and/or not in the slightest bit supported.  One I found, Joomunity, shows promise... but again, no support.  I played around with it a few months back, but it gave me problems from the getgo, so I gave up on it.  I like a module that's going to work out of the box, with minimal customization.  As it turns out, this Joomunity component is being dropped for a new CMS-type project called Tuiyo, I believe, although information about this project has been equally elusive.  You see, I had these hopes I'd be able to build the website I have in my head with just a few plugins, but one simply cannot count on third party apps playing well together, even if they're supposedly stand-alone modules.  Joomunity/Tuiyo has a great look and ease of use, and they say a release is just around the corner.  Heh, but that was in February.

And then there's Commmunity Builder.  It has the highest user cound, and is the most popular community component in the Joomla Extensions directory.  It appears to be mostly free as well.  Documentation, however, isn't.  For any help whatsoever, one must pay a subscribtion fee of around $32 US.  Many of the 3rd Party plugins I've some across say they're CB compatible, including a very cool Member Cloud.  CB seems to be fairly well supported and..

So what's the problem?  I've tried this before, and ended up borking the site so badly I had to wipe the slate clean and start over.  There was a problem in that the Main user database didn't sync correctly with our already existing forum db, and I found myself in a position where I couldn't log in to either.  Bad juju's, Batman.

Ah well, why stress?  Tuiyo isn't out yet, and may not be for some time.  I haven't been happy with the gallery apps I've tried, and our forum is nicely stashed away in a nonconflicting location.  Ok, Community Builder - here I come!

WYSIWIG Editors

What you see is what you get... really?  In posting the last article, I just noticed there is no Helvetica available w/ this current editor.  Now I have to try them all, durnit.  I like the features of this one better than the last (sorry, can't remember their names), but I must have Helvetica!  Ack - off to research I go...

Ok.

Now we have it.

Helvetica!

Starting Over

As we recently began the dive back into Second Life, we realized just how much we left hanging, and just how far things have progressed since then.  Our original SL project, The Great SnurbO'Matic (SL's FIRST InWorld sculpting tool) created such a stir that we jumped right in to form a company, build a website, and so on and so forth.  But we took on too much too soon, I think, and we were quickly led a hundred different directions.  What it comes down to is this:  I never took the time to learn anything fully; I merely hacked my way through, learning bits and pieces so as to get what I could done for the moment.

So here we are, another year older, another year wiser, and starting over:

  • Upgraded Joomla 1.0 to 1.59.
  • Functional links to the Sculpt Studio blog, Skyhighatry Designs Forum, my Flickr gallery, and the Skyhighatry Rockshop.
  • Added logo.
  • Cleaned up extra Joomla crap, leaving the base template.
  • NOTE:  All article text shall be displayed in Helvetica.

Need to:

  • Build Sculpt Studio section.  This includes creating banding and marketing materials.
  • Add some imagery.
  • Install a new gallery; integrate within.  I tried this before, but somewhat unsuccessfully.  I blame old Joomla.
  • Integrate forum.
  • Set up Skyhighatry email (again).
  • New templating.  The first time around, I started with the templating, which threw everything off, module wise.
  • Reload the old articles, presenting a history of Skyhighatry Designs.
  • Keep working on this list.
